The first part of the excursion, to the top of the church San Martino, is not difficult, instead of the second part to reach the peak of Sasso: the path is narrow, it is better to be careful.
You can reach San Martino church and “il Sasso“ from Tremezzo- Rogaro or from Cadenabbia.
It is very well signed! The adventure begins from the bridge of Ronconi: on the left side you can admire some little chapels from “Via Crucis”.
After some hairpins you find in from of you the “Chiesetta degli Alpini” a big chapel in honour of Italian Alpine .
Once you are out of the wood the climb will be less steep and you can admire the spectacular view!

To reach the top of Sasso di San Martino from the church you descend on the path previously followed, after crossing the valley at the crossroads you turn right, pass a hut and go up into the woods. You continue the ascent under the sun , fortunately among the rocks you will find a freshwater spring where you can refresh yourseves. We skirt a large rocky spur and enter a wooded area, you go up towards some farmhouses. After passing the farmhouses you go up the asphalt road for a short stretch, in the clearing we immediately turn right and after some hairpines you will arrive at the top of Sasso di San Martino from where you can admire a splendid panorama of Lake Como.

Abbazia di Piona
A Cistercian abbey that has marvellous setting
on a promontory stretching out into the lake.
The church is a Romanesque gem that the Cluniac order raised, there are attractive 13th-century frescos, but the star is the 13th century, irregularly shaped cloister, a rich example of transitional style from Romanesque to Gothic; it’s an oasis of peace. The monks who live here today enjoy incomparable views west over the lake to Gravedona and the snowcapped peaks behind it and to the north.
The Abbey - which can be reached by car along a cobbled street that branches off the SP72, and by lake with the ferry public transport (see the section "timetables")- is a typical building of the comacina art. Made in visible square stone is a rare gem of the romanic lombard architecture. The church contains the remains of ancient frescos. To the right of the apse stands a beautiful square bell tower.
To be seen is the charming cloister built in the transitional style from roman to gothic. This is the reference point around the monastery, a place of silence and prayer. The chapter house, located on the eastern side of the cloister, is still used by the community of monks.
A nice walk, surrounded by tall cypress trees, leads to the lake with a beautiful view. There is also a small kiosk.
The Abbey is open from Monday to Sunday from 9 to 12 a.m. and from 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and it’s available a large free parking.
